January 25, 2003, the President of the United States along with Congress announced
a historic reorganization plan that merged several agencies into one new department
responsible for the protection of our homeland. Approximately 170,000 government
employees in 22 different Federal organizations were merged into the Department
of Homeland Security pursuant to the Department of Homeland Security Act of 2002.
Since its inception in 1924, the mission of the Border Patrol has been the protection
of this Nation's borders. This highly mobile, uniformed enforcement arm of the
INS has earned and enjoys one of the highest reputations in the law enforcement
community. History has shown the Border Patrol resolve in responding to national
crises throughout the United States. The response and deployment capabilities
of the Border Patrol include the prevention of the first attempted hijacking of
a commercial airplane in 1961, riot control in Los Angeles in 1992, security at
various U.S. international airports shortly after September 11 and the safeguarding
of the Winter Olympics in 2002.
On March 1, 2003, the U.S. Border Patrol was officially transferred from the Department
of Justice where it has served since 1940 to the Department of Homeland Security.
To commemorate this historic event, we have created this commemorative badge depicting
the transition of the Border Patrol from the Department of Justice to our new
of Homeland Security”
